Quick fixes

Check these first.

These are the settings most likely to block dictation, hotkeys, or text insertion.

oto is not hearing audio

  • Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Microphone, and make sure oto is enabled.
  • Confirm the correct input device is selected in oto.
  • Try a short recording in a quiet room to rule out input noise.

The hotkey is not working

  • Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Accessibility, and make sure oto is enabled.
  • Check whether another app is already using the same shortcut.
  • Try the default shortcut before setting a custom one.

Text is not appearing where you type

  • Confirm Accessibility permission is enabled.
  • Click into the target text field before dictating.
  • Try pasting into a simple app like Notes to isolate app-specific behavior.

Accuracy feels off

  • Try a larger Whisper model for better accuracy.
  • Use auto-detect for mixed-language speech.
  • Reduce background noise and speak at a natural pace.
