How It Actually Works.
Transcription Engines
oto ships with three transcription engines: OpenAI Whisper (tiny through large), NVIDIA Parakeet v3, and Apple SpeechAnalyzer (macOS 26+). All three run entirely on your hardware. Your Mac's CPU and Neural Engine do the work. No server. No API call. No internet connection required.
AI Enhancement (Optional)
oto offers optional AI text cleanup. If you use a local model through Ollama, everything stays on your machine. If you connect a cloud API (OpenAI, Claude, or Gemini), only the transcribed text is sent — never your audio. Your API keys are stored in macOS Keychain, encrypted by the operating system.
App Store Distribution
oto is distributed exclusively through the Mac App Store. Apple handles all payments and downloads. We see aggregate statistics — total downloads, country breakdowns — but nothing that identifies you. No name. No email. No payment info.
No Analytics SDKs
There is no tracking code inside oto. No analytics framework. No crash reporter. No phone-home behavior of any kind.
